African elephants are the largest land mammals. They can weigh up to 6 tonnes and reach a height of 3 meters.
African forest elephants are critically endangered.
African savanna elephants are also endangered.
Both species have suffered sharp declines in population due to poaching and habitat loss.
The number of African forest elephants fell by more than 86% over 31 years.
The population of African savanna elephants decreased by at least 60% over the last 50 years.
Poaching has significantly increased since 2008 and continues to threaten populations.
There are currently around 415,000 African elephants in the wild.
Conservation efforts are underway to protect and preserve these vulnerable species.
